Knowing God

J.M. Diener

October 2003

Lately I’ve been reading in Philippians. I have come to really enjoy that little book, especially Paul’s prayer for the Christians in Philippi in Philippians 1:9-11 (NASB):

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

What struck me most deeply about these verses is the idea that our love is supposed to “abound ... more and more in real knowledge”. This “knowledge” is not merely head knowledge but the experiential knowledge of God, the fact that He acts in my life, has spoken into it and changed it. It is an extremely intimate knowledge, one that is paralleled only by all discernment, which allows us to understand our human brothers and sisters. I want to know God more in this sense, that experiential level that changes us so deeply that we’ll never be the same again.
